Nature Photonics: Femtosecond X-ray Fourier holography imaging of free-flying nanoparticles

Ultrafast X-ray imaging on individual fragile specimens such as aerosols, metastable particles, superfluid quantum systems and live biospecimens provides high-resolution information that is inaccessible with conventional imaging techniques. Coherent X-ray diffractive imaging, however, suffers from intrinsic loss of phase, and therefore structure recovery is often complicated and not always uniquely defined. Here, we introduce the method of in-flight holography, where we use nanoclusters as reference X-ray scatterers to encode relative phase information into diffraction patterns of a virus.

ELI will join International Day of Light 2018

The International Day of Light will provide an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of the central role that light plays in the lives of the citizens of the world in areas of science, culture and art, education, sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications and energy. Following the highly successful International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015, the broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society to participate in activities around the world around May 16th to raise awareness of science and technology, art and culture, and their importance in achieving the goals of UNESCO — education, equality and peace.

Enhancement of proton therapy effectiveness experimentally demonstrated for the first time: Proton Boron Capture Therapy (PBCT)

Enhancement of proton therapy effectiveness experimentally demonstrated for the first time: Proton Boron Capture Therapy (PBCT)

The use of proton-boron nuclear fusion to enhance proton therapy effectiveness in the cancer cell killing rate has been demonstrated experimentally as a result of a scientific collaboration among researchers coming from Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS-INFN) in Catania, ELI-Beamlines (ELI-IoP-ASCR) in Prague, Department of Physics of University of Naples Federico II (DoP-UoN), and Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK) in Trento. The experimental research, carried out at LNS, is a result of two years of intensive experimental activity based on trials with various cell lines.

LEAK workshop conclusions

“ LEAK workshop has been the first international meeting about kHz laser plasma electron accelerators. The goal of LEAK workshop was to discuss the recent results about laser electron acceleration at high repetition rate, study the potential medical and industrial applications of such beams, and, finally review the possible lasers which can be used in this context. LEAK has been jointly organized with the French colleagues of the Laboratorie d’Optique Appliquée, who have been the first to demonstrate good quality electron beams produced at kHz repetition rate.
